One question I have that you don't cover here is how to deal with time as a DP. When you run out of time, how can keep the story from suffering. This is one of the things that I had to fight with the director on because of our conflicting goals. The director wanted the performance, but I knew if we did too many takes, we would miss some of the key storytelling shots. Also you don't always get to shoot what you plan. In a lot of cases, the actors demand freedom which is like prison to a cinematographer. While the actor is free to move around the set, the cinematographer has less room to work and a bigger challenge hiding equipment. For instance, I worked with an actor that wanted to rehearse the scene, throwing out all storyboards and plans. He determined what he wanted to do, and then I had to figure out the shots based on his blocking. This was very annoying and difficult. The only way I stayed sane through the shoot was too look at it as a challenge to my ability. (Although it was very difficult to stay positive and even have much ability to be creative while working 12-18 hour days) Any tips for speed and decisiveness as a Cinematographer?

Thanks for this post! As the producer of a few indy Christian films I've seen this exact thing time and time again. It's particularly bad on Netflix. As soon as Dialtone came out on Netflix we received over 30 negative votes the day the DVD became available to rent! We also saw this occur on IMDB, but our fans have fought back.

If you've seen the film, please vote and help us spread the word!

I am trying to find out how to get this information to some of the big churches in our area. Would love to see this in Valdosta, GA. Fireproof made a huge impression on the community, and I want to see it continued. Will continue to pray for this and other Christian films coming out.

Kyle, this is a fantastic article. I've read it before, and reading it again I was so impressed with the wisdom and encouraged by the "can-do" attitude you express. You've certainly practiced what you preach with Standing Firm! Thanks for taking the time to write and share all these wonderful tips and important filmmaking lessons so that we can all produce more Christ-honoring films.

I am interested in seeing what is going on with directors and writers of projects in the Christian arena that are coming out with new movies soon. Put a link to their websites. Maybe also set up a way to buy the movies through the mail to help each other out. Put a P.O. Box as to where to buy them for each project. Kind of like a mini mall of information. Another idea, try reviewing Christian films as well as non-Christian that are out in the theaters or just came out on video with your Christian view of it. If you do I will link it to my page. Finally, interview actors like John Schneider from Dukes the Hazzard fame that became a Christian a few years ago and get his take on the movie industry with the Christian set of eyes and how we, Christians, can help Christian entertainment grow and mature to be a force in that world. Or maybe why an actor wants to act in Christian projects for starters. God bless with the websites I will pray for your successes.

Great article Kyle.

I love your brutal honesty.

I agree, why settle for enough?

I can usually tell when someone has settled for 'enough' in most situations film, business, life in general... I see the possibilities beyond their enough.

Thanks for the reminder

"Currently" is the key word that allows you to share an article about no one "living" off of Christian filmmaking. I lived off of it during the 80's and part of the 90’s, along with hundreds of others. Unfortunately, the market shifted due to video and most had to close up shop.

The market is now rebuilding and it won't be long before it can sustain multiple filmmakers again. According to the Barns research team, Christian families are willing to watch 2.5 Christian films a month, which gives lots of room for many new and returning players. However, let me also make a simple point -- The personality it takes to be a filmmaker is the same ingredient that makes an entrepreneur.

I will never only do one thing… So, does that mean I won’t make my living at filmmaking?

I’m in the entertainment/ministry business and I will continue to be published, do speaking engagements, sell ancillary products, etc. Let’s not be such a purist that we don’t leave room for new technologies and other avenues of distribution yet to be invented. The new model is in development and we will soon be able to "live" off of Christian filmmaking again.

My husband and I have a son who is lost, questioning and in confusion. God has used this parable to show us how to respond to him even before we knew the extent of his pain.

A pastor shared this video with us just recently because he thought it paralled our story. It is an excellent interpretation of God's heart. Hearing this story from everyone's viewpoint brought wonderful insight and a fresh anointing to this timeworn parable.

Thank you, Jason.

This is very interesting. I'm a musician that composes scores for films as well as produces and performs original music. This is the same that you see in the music business as well. You need to have multiple income streams to "make a living" off of artist work these days. For me, like I said, I compose, produce, and perform, but my day job is fixing computers. Hopefully, as things pick up, moving into more full-time music will happen, but for now the day-job is paying the bills.

Yipper! I also agree...great article , thanks for sharing!

How the West was Won is the film that got me interested in filmmaking, it was also was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

I thought I would share a little about with everyone.

A Friend of mine David Strohmaier, Director/Writer/Editor of the Documentary "Cinerama Adventure" about this larger than life format. The aspect ratio was 2.8:1.

In the 1950s, Hollywood's attempt to lure people away from their television sets and back into cinemas led to a battle of screen sizes.

Fred Waller of Paramount's Special Effects Department developed a
large screen system called Cinerama, which utilized three cameras to record a single image.

Three electronically synchronized projectors were used to project an image on a huge screen curved at an angle of 165 degrees, producing an aspect ratio of 2.8:1.

This Is Cinerama was the first Cinerama film released in 1952 and was a thrilling travelogue which featured a roller-coaster ride.

"How the West was Won" was filmed with 3 cameras using the three-strip Cinerama process.
http://www.cineramaadventure.com/theworks.htm

the picture quality when projected onto curved screens in theaters was stunning but, with attempts to convert the movie to a smaller screen it suffered from that process of technical shortcomings and when seen in letterbox format the actors' faces are nearly indistinguishable in long shots.

When the actors were "talking to each other, they did not look at each other while filming in order for the cameras to work together but, when it was shown, it looks just as if they did.

It was also noted that Director John Ford complained about having to dress such huge sets since Cinerama photographed a much wider view than the standard single camera process to which Hollywood directors had become accustomed.

For more information feel free to check out: http://www.cineramaadventure.com/

Hope I didn't bore everyone.
